The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) encourages children in grades 3-6 to read more books for pleasure, to explore a wide variety of titles, and to develop powers of discrimination. A list of twenty books, both fiction and nonfiction, is released each year.
The program affords students the opportunity to voice their opinion about the books through the Bluebonnet voting process. Students across the state of Texas are eligible to vote for their favorite Bluebonnet title if they read (or have read to them) at least five of the twenty titles from the current list.
Participating schools send their voting tallies to the TLA office each January. The author of the book receiving the most votes statewide is named the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award and is recognized at the annual Bluebonnet Luncheon, held at the Texas Library Association Annual Convention each April.
Aldine is proud that the majority of our students are eligible to vote each year.
You’ll find the current list of books here.
Staffing: Aldine libraries are staffed by certified school librarians. Certification as a school librarian in Texas requires at least two years of teaching experience, completion of a graduate level program in library science, a Master’s degree, and a passing score on the state library certification exam.
Electronic Resources: Aldine Library Services provides online databases, ebooks, and digital audiobooks with 24/7 access available through the Aldine ISD website.
Print and Digital Resources: Books and digital materials are available for checkout by Aldine ISD students, parents, and employees. These groups check out about 1.5 million items a year .
Interlibrary Loan: Materials can be borrowed from any Aldine campus library. Approximately 20,000 items are shared between schools each year.
