The school district was honored with the 2022 Outstanding Civics Initiative and Outstanding English Language Learner Initiative Awards by the Mexican American School Board Association in San Antonio.
Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney, Board Trustees, and her Executive Leadership Team members accepted the awards at the 2022 MASBA Conference held earlier this month.
2022 MASBA Recognition of Excellence Awards
Outstanding Civics Initiative — Family and Community University
Outstanding English Language Learner Initiative — La Promesa
Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney said, “I thank MASBA for acknowledging our teachers, leaders, and district staff for their outstanding work. Our district has seen growth and progress; these awards recognize that effort and work. We are truly grateful for the honors.”
La Promesa developed as a newcomer and dual language experience school. The high school opened in the fall of 2021 to ninth graders. La Promesa has been increasing one grade level until it becomes a Grade 9-12 program in the 2024-2025 school year. The campus initially began admitting students new to the country who needed to learn English. Since its inception, the school has been developing its English-Spanish dual language program. It will expand enrollment by beginning to admit students interested in the dual language experience for the 2023-2024 school year.
Family and Community University empowers parents to build their capacity and create awareness of their potential to help their children’s academic achievement through education and leadership opportunities in four categories: 1) academic life, 2) community, 3) well-being and social interactions, and 4) continuing education. Parents can take classes in person, virtually, or view pre-recorded videos. As they complete courses, they earn tokens toward graduating. Parents with 15 tokens graduate in the spring of each school year.
La Promesa and FCU build on Aldine ISD’s strategic plan, A New Way Forward, to give all district students access to high-quality schools and educational experiences that prepare them for their future, including developing opportunities that empower families to become stronger advocates for their children.
MASBA launched the MASBA Recognition of Excellence Awards this year to recognize outstanding achievements and share best practices within our community.
MASBA is a voluntary, non-profit, statewide education association that has served local Texas school boards since 1970.
