On November 13, 76 ninth-graders from the HEAL Program at Nimitz High School achieved a significant milestone by earning their medical scrubs through dedication and effort.

After weeks of basic core instruction, shadowing, and practicing simple procedures at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital, the students celebrated a milestone with the scrub ceremony, getting closer to pursuing a medical career.

Memorial Hermann educators hosted the inaugural Commitment to HEAL Ceremony “From Classroom to Care.”

It was the school’s first ceremony to give students their scrubs; this is the program’s first official year. Chief Transformation Officer Adrian Bustillos said they wanted to celebrate the students’ endless possibilities in the medical field.

“The ceremony recognizes the students’ hard work these past few months and encourages them to keep pushing toward their goal,” said Bustillos.

HEAL Program students have been actively engaged since the summer, seizing unique opportunities such as Memorial Hermann’s Summer Infusion Experience. This experience, which exposed high school students to HEAL’s five career pathways, ignited excitement and hope for the future of healthcare.

About the HEAL Program at Nimitz High School

The HEAL Program is the district’s latest Choice School/CTE option. The HEAL Program, housed at the former Nimitz Ninth Grade campus site, is supported by a groundbreaking $31 million investment from Bloomberg Philanthropies. This significant investment, the largest private foundation grant in our school district’s history, is a testament to the foundation’s vision to connect health and education systems.

“The unwavering support from Memorial Hermann and the Bloomberg Foundation demonstrates the commitment from all involved of the high-quality education and successful careers in healthcare we can provide our students,” Bustillos shared.

Memorial Hermann and Aldine ISD co-developed HEAL’s curriculum. The collaboration offers robust academic programming, specialized healthcare classes, work-based learning, and the opportunity to earn industry-valued credentials and certifications. The program is being phased in over four academic years to serve approximately 760 students at capacity. The initiative provides students with direct work experience and access to rewarding jobs within Memorial Hermann immediately after graduation. Click HERE to read more about the partnership.
