Aldine ISD Trustees Announce Impact Award Winners for November

During the Nov. 19 Board of Education meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees recognized a number of district employees with the Aldine Impact Awards. Aldine Impact Awards are given to district employees and community members who go above and beyond the call of duty in their respective roles with Aldine ISD. Board President Dr. Kimberley Booker nominated Ervin Brown, who works special events at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center, Dominique Wiltz, an early childhood aide at Jones Primary and Myriam Tovar, a dispatcher at the Westside Transportation Department, as her nominees. Board Vice-President Paul Shanklin nominated Paula Love, executive assistant to the Chief Operations Officer, as his nominee. Board Secretary Connie Esparza nominated the Donaldson Administration Building custodial staff consisting of Ana Bonilla, Jose Aguera, Gloria Aliva and Delmy Ortez as her nominees. Assistant Board Secretary Rose Avalos nominated Karen Strahan, Assistant Director of Transportation, as her nominee. Board Member Randy Bates nominated Roberta Massey, a router with the Transportation Department, as his nominee. Board Member Steve Mead nominated Mead Middle School volleyball coach Samantha Hall and Stovall Middle School band director John Ware as his nominees. Board Member Dr. Viola M. Garcia nominated Sandra Villanueva, the head custodian of the M.O. Campbell Educational Center, as his nominee.
Financial Audit Approved
During the Nov. 19 Trustees meeting, Chief Financial Officer Stan Osborne presented the district’s Audit Report, prepared by external auditors Weaver and Tidwell, for the 2023-24 school year. The Audit Report was unmodified or a clean opinion, according to Weaver and Tidwell. Weaver and Tidwell stated it was the highest level of assurance to be given on a financial statement. The Audit Report will now be forwarded to the Texas Education Agency.
Aldine ISD K9 Officer and Partner Recognized
During the Nov. 19 Board meeting, one employee, and his canine partner, were recognized for their leadership, connecting with fellow employees and impacting student success.
- Aldine ISD Police Chief Paul Cordova named K9 Officer Mike Gerald and his partner ASTA as his department’s Employees of the Month.
Staff Assignment Announced
During the Nov. 20 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney announced one staff assignment.
- Dr. Kwabena Mensah was named School Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools after serving as Chief of Staff and Collaborative Communities with Fort Bend ISD.
Teaching, Leading, and Learning Department Recognizes Four Teachers
During the Nov. 19 Board of Trustees meeting, the Teaching, Leading, and Learning Department recognized four Aldine ISD teachers who have earned state and national recognitions.
Chief Academic Officer Dr. Faviola Cantu announced that Stehlik Elementary teacher Ana Cuevas was named the Texas Association of Bilingual Education (TABE) Bilingual Teacher of the Year. She was awarded a one-week stay in Spain by the Embassy of Spain and Cuevas will represent Texas at the National Association of Bilingual Educators conference in Atlanta in February. Dr. Cantu also announced that LaPromesa teacher Bailey Steffeck was named TABE’s ESL Secondary Teacher of the Year. Steffeck was awarded a one-month trip to Spain by the Embassy of Spain. Grace Delgado, Executive Director of Multilingual Programs, assisted Dr. Cantu during the announcements.
Chief of Schools Dr. Javier Villarreal announced that coach Elizabeth Flores has been selected as the 2024 Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAPHERD) Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year. Flores will receive her award Dec. 6 at the TAPHERD Annual Convention. Flores teachers at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy.
Dr. Villarreal also announced that Aldine Middle School teacher Julia Mixon has been named the recipient of the Outstanding Teaching of Humanities Award. Mixon was one of 12 recipients of this prestigious award from across the State of Texas. Mixon was awarded $5,000 and AMS also received $1,000.
Trustees Approve Action Items
During the Nov. 19 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved the following action items:
- Approved the minutes from previous board meetings
- Approved a resolution to cast votes in the election to appoint five directors to the Harris Central Appraisal District Board of Directors
- Approved a collaborative research agreement between the University of Texas Health Science Center of Houston and Aldine ISD for the “All for Them Texas:” a multifaceted dissemination and implementation approach to increase HPV vaccination research program
- Approved a Memorandum of Understanding for the Financial Aid and Admissions Applications Filing Status Information Sharing Agreement for Texas Public School District or Charter Schools for the 2024-25 school year and beyond
- Approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Lone Star College, Aldine ISD, and the University of Houston-Downtown for the 2+2 program in preparation to enroll in a baccalaureate program at UH-Downtown for the 2024-25 school year and beyond
- Approved District and Campus goals and Performance Objectives for the 2024-25 school year
- Approved single contracts and purchases of $100,000 and greater
- Approved the monthly Tax Office refunds
Prior to the start of the Nov. 19 Board meeting, the Davis High School Choir, under the direction of Dorothy Jordan, performed the National Anthem. The choir also performed in the lobby prior to the start of the board meeting. Students from Kujawa Elementary School lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pledge to the Texas Flag and the Garcia Middle School LOTC Color Guard presented the colors. The December board meeting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the Donaldson Administration Building.
